Signing up for web site access

Some web sites ask you to create an account to view certain content. Before you do this, check the following details.

  • Does the web site have a privacy policy?
  • Does the web site have contact details?
  • Does the web site have a double opt in mailing list.

If you're not sure you may like to move on the another web site. Alternatively set up a second email address for sites like this with Hotmail or one of the other free services.

Definition [Double Opt In Mailing List] :- You will be asked to tick a box to confirm you want to join a mailing list. You then have to reply to an email to confirm that you meant it. This is becoming a legal requirement for UK companies, to do with the DATA PROTECTION ACT.

Web site guest books: - pages that allow you to leave comments about the web site

Some guest books on web sites show your email address. Spammers can use clever software to extract all the e-mail addresses from guest books. Result = You get spam. If in doubt don't sign a guest book or don't give you're e-mail address.

Newsgroups& Forums

These a been a favorite for spam companies for years. Sophisticated software can extract the email addresses, and you know what this means... more SPAM!

Only use forums that hide your e-mail address. If you want to leave your email address instead of writing it like this:-

me@mycompany.com

write it like this:- me at mycompany dot com

Any human being can work out what your email address is, but spam software can not.
